Toxins Lurking in Your Everyday Health & Beauty Products Could Be Making You Sick. Why All-Natural is Better.

Pura Naturals® is environmentally responsible using soap-infused cleansers that are free of gluten, latex, petrochemicals, parabens, phthalates, artificial colors, and artificial fragrances. We are 100% cruelty-free and vegan. But what does that mean to you? Do you know what parabens or phthalates are? Many of us don’t realize what is in the beauty products and cleansers we use on a daily basis, and how they can be harmful to us. Just like we have all grown to look at our food labels, it’s time to do the same with our health and beauty products, and we want to help! Below we breakdown some of the common ingredients found in health and beauty products that you should avoid:

Parabens

Parabens are used as preservatives that prevent the growth of bacteria, mold and yeast in cosmetic products. Common parabens that you should stay away from include: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben. When these parabens enter your body through the skin they mimic hormones inside the body and disrupt functions of the endocrine system. These estrogen mimicking properties are associated with increased risk of breast cancer. These chemicals are absorbed through the skin and have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors. Parabens can be found in makeup, body washes, deodorants, shampoos and facial cleansers.

Phthalates

Phthalates are used in cosmetic and personal-care products (including fragrances and nail polish). A group of chemicals used in hundreds of products to increase the flexibility and softness of plastics. The main phthalates in cosmetics and personal care products are dibutyl phthalate in nail polish, diethyl phthalate in perfumes and lotions, and dimethyl phthalate in hair spray. In the past few years, researchers have linked these phthalates to asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, low IQ, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development and male fertility issues. Unfortunately, it is not disclosed on every product as it’s added to “fragrance” (it’s referred to as a “trade secret” in the industry), a major loophole in the law. Environmental Working Group researchers found more than 75 percent of products listing the ingredient “fragrance” contained phthalates.

Artificial Colors  & Artificial Fragrances

Artificial Colors are also known as coal tar dyes and synthetic dyes. FD&C refers to food, drugs and cosmetics. D&C refers to drugs and cosmetics. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No. 6  and sometimes followed by the word “lake”. In industrial production of colorants, “lake” is a term used for pigments or dyes that are precipitated with metal salts such as aluminum, calcium, barium, or others. Some of the lake dyes may be derived from naturally occurring plant or animal ingredients, but the vast majority of lakes is synthetically produced from coal tar or petroleum.

It is suspected to be an environmental toxin and to be persistent or bioaccumulative, and considered a known human carcinogen in the European Classification and Labeling – the European Union has banned it.

More than 95 percent of the chemicals in artificial fragrances are derived from petrochemicals. These chemicals include: benzene derivatives, aldehydes, phthalates, and a slew of other known toxins that are capable of causing cancer, birth defects, nervous-system disorders and allergies—some of which are cited on the EPA’s hazardous waste list. Unfortunately, once again manufacturers can legally hide hundreds of synthetic chemicals in the one word—”fragrance” without revealing what those ingredients are.

Petrochemicals

Petrochemicals are chemical products made from the raw materials of petroleum or other hydrocarbons. Almost all skin care products contain petroleum based materials. In the past, not much was known about the long term exposure to petrochemicals. However, today, although it’s not been proven that all petrochemicals are carcinogenic, we know that it is linked to the rise in cancer, along with other diseases. The two main classes of petrochemical raw materials are olefins (including ethylene and propylene) and aromatics (including benzene and xylene isomers), both of which are produced in very large quantities throughout the world. Below is a list of petrochemicals you should avoid, which are often used as ingredients in beauty and skincare products:

Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol. It is used to add scent or color to products.

Isopropyl alcohol is colorless and often used in solvents. It’s a common ingredient in nail polish remover.

Propylene glycol is used as a moisturizer in some skincare and cosmetics. It increases the body’s acidity and can cause allergic reactions to those with sensitive skin.

Benzene is now a known carcinogenic and was frequently used in fragrance and aftershave in the early twentieth century. It has been widely boycotted by the beauty industry.

Phenol has antiseptic qualities and can be used in cosmetic surgery as an extreme exfoliant to remove layers of dead skin.

Acetone is the key ingredient in most nail polish removers. It can be toxic just from skin absorption, but generally that means in large quantities.

Gluten-Free

If you have celiac disease you may want to stay away from cosmetics that contain gluten, some say these cosmetics can trigger celiac disease symptoms. There’s no cure for celiac disease and is managed by eliminating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, as well as many common food additives. But many sufferers, are discovering there may be more to a gluten-free lifestyle than making dietary changes: Gluten is sneaky and can be found in some makeup and toiletries you use on a daily basis. It’s used as a binder to help ingredients stick together, and to add moisture to products through gluten-derived oils.

Latex-Free

Similar to having a gluten allergy if you have an allergy to latex the last thing you want to do is apply it to your skin, especially your face. While latex is mostly found in stage makeup, it’s widely used in application tools. Makeup sponges are often made with latex.

100% Cruelty Free and Vegan

This means there is no animal testing and no animal products involved in the making of any of our products. Many cosmetics and personal care products—such as lipstick, mascara, shampoo, and cologne— are tested on animals. It’s estimated that thousands of mice, guinea pigs, rats, and rabbits suffer and die in these tests every year in the U.S. alone. Pain relief is rarely provided and the animals used are generally killed at the end of each test. You can learn more about animal testing here and how you can help end cosmetic testing on animals.

Why BeBetterFoam™?

Many of us have an idea of what sustainability means conceptually, but how many of us have an idea of what this means in terms of our lifestyle and personal responsibilities? Sustainable living is a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual’s or society’s use of the Earth’s natural resources and personal resources. Practitioners of sustainable living often attempt to reduce their carbon footprint by making changes in their everyday lives by altering methods of transportation, energy consumption, the products they purchase, and their diet. Many individuals believe sorting their garbage and recycling is doing their part, which is great, but in reality sustainability takes so much more. Creating a sustainable lifestyle takes commitment, a commitment to being better, better for you, your family, and better for our planet. That is the idea behind Pura Naturals® and the BeBetterFoam™ technology. We strive for better. We learn, we grow and we make a conscious effort to change. One step at a time, we aim to make a difference and you can too!

Creating a sustainable lifestyle doesn’t happen overnight. You start by making small changes in your everyday life and you strive to be better than you were yesterday. If you want to make a change today that is better for you and better for the planet, Pura Naturals® is the answer.

Using the BeBetterFoam™ technology Pura Naturals® is raising the bar and rethinking the way the world cleans, while doing our part to reduce the negative impact to our environment. From our body products to our household products we thrive on creating a portfolio of Earth Conscious® products that will be safe for you and the planet.

How is the BeBetterFoam™ technology better for the environment?

We were inspired to develop BeBetterFoam™ as a crucial need from the devastating and toxic 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Our vision was to aggressively create a safer way to quickly and effectively clean spills and contaminates, and to restore our waterways without harming the environment. Our aqua-phobic and oleophillic foam was approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in all waterways in the United States and was used in wetlands for the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Southern California.

BeBetterFoam™ is a non-toxic plant-based foam with no petroleum by-products and contains renewable resources. It is carbon negative, which means it’s carbon footprint is less than neutral, instead of adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere it removes it. The foam does not contain any harsh chemicals, harmful toxins or adhesives and can be reused. This natural, environmentally responsible solution has paved the way for a full line of better products that are better for the planet and better for you! That’s some pretty good stuff don’t you agree?
